3rd Grade Printmaking

I only did this project with my “extra/bonus” 3rd grade that I see twice a week. We followed the directions from this website: Laugh, Paint, Create. It was a great project on cityscapes, warm and cool colors,  and printmaking. And I will definitely repeat with next year’s 3rd grade class!

1st Grade Bees Printmaking Project

This project showed first graders the art process of printmaking. Here are all the details on what they learned:

Concepts: Elements of Art and Principles of Design: environmental and observational

Objective: Students will be able to apply printmaking techniques by creating a collage from 2 printmaking process. Students will also show details in their artwork by adding texture to their bees’ environment to make the setting look life-like.

5th grade Gyotaku

Wow… what an awesome and fun project. The energy level has not been higher in my classroom all year! I was so excited to do this project, and my excitement may have worn off on the kids. 🙂 So, gyotaku is the ancient Japanese form of printmaking where fishermen would record their catch! I explained to the kids: instead of being able to text their buddies what a huge catch they just caught, they would pin the fins, paint ink on the fish, place rice paper over top of the fish, and peel the rice paper off. Then some would go back and paint details in to their prints. I showed students this awesome video where a father and son go to Florida, go catch a fish, and complete the full gyotaku printing process.
