1st grade Seahorses

Oh how I LOOOOOOOVE this project! This will be first grade’s Kids Kreations project and I really hope a lot of you parents buy them because I want to see them on t-shirts, coffee mugs, mouse pads, everything!

We read Eric Carle’s Mr. Seahorse. We discussed warm and cool colors, painted the background using cool colors and then made a tissue paper collage of warm colored tissue paper. After that, I demonstrated drawing objects from shapes (we broke the body of the seahorse down into recognizable shapes like rectangle for the mouth, circle for the head, oval for the body, etc). Then they cut out the seahorses and added details like seaweed, bubbles, etc.

Here are their creative masterpieces!

So stinking CUTE!!!! I love them 🙂

First we used a sponge and painted using the primary colors, mixing to get the secondary colors – all in ROYGBIV order, to eventually become our chameleon. Then, we did some gadget printing with green and yellow to eventually become our leaves. And lastly, we did a texture crayon rubbing with brown and black crayons to eventually become our tree trunk and tree branches.
