Second graders read the book Tar Beach by African American artist Faith Ringgold. In the story, the main character flew around New York City, seeing many great sights. Afterwards, we discussed cityscapes (and the difference between those and landscapes and seascapes), and showing space by overlapping. We also talked about how we can make patterns with different types of paper to imitate Faith Ringgold’s quilts. And on the last day we drew our “flying people” at the top. A lot to learn in one project, and the artwork turned out awesome!
